St. Rose Registered Nurses & Hospital Staff Win Ground-Breaking Contract
Registered nurses and hospital staff from the CHW affiliated-St. Rose Hospitals overwhelmingly ratified their contract with hospital management that will significantly improve patient protections and professional nursing standards for 1800 employees of the three Las Vegas hospitals.
“We are really proud of our new agreement that provides a more secure future for our families in these hard economic times. Winning up to 38% pay increases and greatly improving the quality and affordability of our health insurance demonstrates that St. Rose values its employees. These improvements will also go a long way in keeping experienced caregivers at our hospital where our patients need us.” said Tima Prieto, CT Technologist, Siena Campus.

Candle Light Vigil Success Leads to Further Movement in Bargaining
Nearly 600 St. Rose employees, our families, other union members and community allies gathered Wednesday night to demonstrate our determination for winning a quality contract for caregivers and patients.
Now if we want to see even more movement at bargaining, we need to continue to demonstrate our unity and keep the pressure on.
It’s time for St. Rose to show their quality care commitment to patients, the community, and their employees by settling the SEIU contract.

More Progress in Bargaining St. Rose Gets Serious About Security and Contract Improvements
3 New Agreements: We’re dedicated to bargaining a strong contract. Today, our Bargaining Team did a great job of telling management about our concerns with the issues we presented. Now we have to hold management accountable to win our priorities— wages, retirement, healthcare, EIB/PTO and better staffing.
Here are three articles we reached a tentative agreement on with management - bringing us closer to a contract.
*NEW* Discipline and Discharge - A 14 day maximum on investigatory suspension paid or unpaid. Also, we reduced the cleansing period for discipline from 18 to 14 months.
*NEW* Bereavement Leave: We changed the length from 3 shifts to a standard 40 hours. Note that management confirmed that the current time for Bereavement is 36 hours. If you have had any issues with length of your bereavement, contact Lilly Vallee at

*NEW* Reduction in Force: We agreed to the current contract language with minimal wording changes. No major changes.

Speaking for Ourselves in SEIU
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The picture below is worth that and more. It's our over-100 person SEIU bargaining team -- who represent every unit and classification at St. Rose. That picture says volumes about the difference between SEIU and CNA.
CNA has
only 4 RNs
at St. Mary's in Reno speaking for 500 nurses. And CNA nurses aren't even allowed to elect their bargaining team.

As We Look to the Future
It's important to remember what St. Rose caregivers achieved in our first six months in SEIU Nevada -- and to look at what CNA has failed to achieve in its nearly six months representing RNs at St. Mary's in Reno.
2005 - SEIU Wins First St. Rose Contract in 6 MonthsAt St. Rose, we united in SEIU in late October 2004 and by early April 2005 we had a contract with:
- Experienced-based wage scales with everyone to scale within 6 months
- The first pension in any private Nevada hospital
- Call pay more than doubled
- Best floating protections in the Valley
2008 - CNA Still Has NO Contract After promising St. Mary's-Reno nurses San Francisco wages, CNA hasn't even won a contract -- and now CNA is bogged down bargaining for things like bulletin boards and jury duty pay.

As We're Fixing Health Insurance, CNA Fails To
Working together in SEIU Nevada, we've made real progress in
fixing our health insurance.

But out in California, CNA can't win a health insurance fix for 4,000 of their RNs.
CNA nurses at Sutter hospitals just held their third strike in six months, but are still stuck with "substandard health care proposals." (San Francisco Chronicle, 3/11/08)

Making Progress for All of Us
Our over 100-person SEIU bargaining team -- with the combined strength of RNs and ancillary staff -- continued to make progress in negotiations Wednesday. Caregivers from all three hospitals shared experiences from their own lives and practice, showing CHW management how our new contract proposals will make a difference for our patients, ourselves and our families.
